Irish rugby fan arrested in Italy after 'trying to grab soldier's machine gun'

The incident happened on Friday evening.

AN IRISHMAN WHO was in Rome to watch the Six Nations match against Italy was arrested after allegedly trying to grab a rifle belonging to a soldier.

The man was out with a group of Irish fans on Friday when they walked by a number of soldiers who were guarding the Spanish embassy at around 7pm. The men began to sing at the soldiers and police claim one man confronted the armed men. They got involved in a scuffle and, at one point, the man attempted to grab the soldier’s rifle, it has been alleged.

The man was arrested and brought to a local police station. He was then brought to San Giovani hospital where his condition was checked.

According to a statement released on the police force’s Facebook page: ”The fans were singing and screaming in front of the embassy of Spain where a military truck service was. One of the men, who was drunk, started to mock the military. The situation worsened and the fan started shoving the soldier and tried to grab his machine gun.”

The fan must return to court in Italy in June, according to the Irish Sun.
